The room we almost didn’t build

Above the laundry room there’s a loft that very nearly never happened.

When we first designed our home, the space above the laundry room and pantry wasn’t a room at all. It was a vaulted ceiling that went all the way up. Then, once we started building, we found out our plans had to be re-engineered. So we went to my brother-in-law, who is really good at that sort of thing. While he was working through our plans, he said, ’You know that space above your laundry room? You could tuck a little loft in there.’

I’d never thought of it, because there was no way to get to it. The staircase sat right on the other side of the wall. But we decided we could add a little secret bridge off the stairs, and voilà! Today it’s our Lego room, and all day long I hear the happy sound of Legos being shuffled up there.

Turns out it was the best decision we almost didn’t make. Just watch where you step.

Love, Rachel

Letters from the porch

Pull up a chair.

Every so often I’ll write you a letter. A recipe, a tradition we’re trying, whatever magic (or glorious mess) happened at our table that week. No lectures, nothing salesy, just a friend waving from the porch.
