From the Orange Grove to the Mountains
I was a California beach baby, born in Escondido, where the groves were full of oranges, avocados and pomegranates and the air smelled like orange blossoms and honeysuckle. My grandpa would open an orange for us right there in the grove, laughing his Winnie the Pooh laugh, and my grandma always had fresh-squeezed orange juice and cinnamon graham crackers waiting. Fresh OJ is still my favorite drink.
Then I moved to Utah, married a mountain man, and raised a whole bunch of mountain babies. These recipes carry both places: sunshine and citrus from the grove, and hearty, fill-the-table food from the mountains, made for a big family that’s always hungry. The mountains are where my roots grew, but the ocean still feels like home, and you’ll taste a little of both on every page.

Celebration cakes
A few favorites I’ve decorated over the years.

The Charcuterie Board
A little sweet, a little salty, fig jam, and something crunchy, all piled onto a wood round. It’s gone before anyone finds a napkin.

Blueberries & Buttercream
Sometimes I take my classic white cake and buttercream and top it with fresh blueberries and a dusting of powdered sugar. I made this one for my daughter-in-law Abby’s bridal shower. She loves charcuterie, so the whole party had a charcuterie theme, and it was absolutely beautiful. Aren’t charcuterie spreads just the most wonderful thing?

A Charcuterie Spread on a Blanket
Lay out a cozy blanket, top it with parchment, and spread out a little bit of everything. Suddenly an ordinary afternoon feels like an occasion.

Pull up a chair.
Every so often I’ll write you a letter. A recipe, a tradition we’re trying, whatever magic (or glorious mess) happened at our table that week. No lectures, nothing salesy, just a friend waving from the porch.
