The Year Owen Was a Tree

Not a superhero. Not a pirate. A tree.

Our family on Halloween 2011: Owen as a tree in brown sweats and felt leaves, with his brothers in costume and me holding the baby

Halloween 2011

In 2011, my little Owen announced he wanted to be a tree for Halloween. Not a superhero. Not a pirate. A tree.

So we put him in brown sweats and tacked little felt leaves all over him, and he was thrilled to death. He was the proudest little tree in the forest.

Honestly, I shouldn’t have been surprised. This is the same child who, a little younger, sat beside me on the porch one afternoon and said, very seriously, “Mom, from now on I want you to call me Seaweed.”

To this day, we joke that Seaweed is his nickname. He just hasn’t ever actually gone by it.

He has always been the funniest, most wonderfully himself little person, and that felt-leaf tree costume is still one of my favorite Halloweens ever.

The best costumes are rarely the fancy ones. They’re the brown sweats and felt leaves, worn by a kid who believes in them all the way.

Happy Halloween, friends. 🍂

Love, Rachel

Letters from the porch

Pull up a chair.

Every so often I’ll write you a letter. A recipe, a tradition we’re trying, whatever magic (or glorious mess) happened at our table that week. No lectures, nothing salesy, just a friend waving from the porch.
